Weezers first album is a classic. Anyone who denies this simple fact is an underground cult minded person with an agenda. the cult of the underground is nice and comforting but it inhibits peoples awareness of the benefits of pop culture.
so.the reason why weezers first album is so great is because it's actually a Cars album sung by new talent and dressed up as new inde new wave. just listen to the hooks and the song structure and you'll see the obviousness of it all. People looked at it as some kind of brand new thing but really it was just Ric doing his thing being the Phil Spectr that he is and handing over the songs to some new kids to sing for him.
now i read zines saying that weezer was the beginning of Emo. if that's true then the Cars are the real beginning of "Emo" and the cars were "new wave" so why do we need the term "emo" if it's just a regeneration of "new wave". to be truthful with you I'm personally a lot more comfortable with the term "new wave" it was a west coast trashy xxx los angeles and peep shows on times square with white kids coming out of brooklynn listening to Peter Tosh that invented new wave. cuz new wave was actualy rooted in the beginning of punk. you'd have blondie opening up for the Ramones.
So if the creators of punk and new wave bands like the slits and talking heads are connected to what people are now triflingly calling emo then we should just call it what it is so people will embrace the entire history instead of just sticking with things called "emo".
the point of this rant is that I just wish more bands would be less afraid to write something with a hook. or write something thats easy to sing along to. or ya know..try to be successful.Joey Ramone never hesitated to explain to people that he wants the Ramones to be the biggest thing in show business. but today so many bands carry the same attitude that I have, and that is that they don't want to be "famous". and what I'm saying is that we need more people like Joey Ramone who don't care what peoples attitudes are about fame or other famous people but that they just want to be the biggest band in music.
period.and cuz when there's more "famous" bands that actually give a damn then it's easier for smaller bands like myself to just be allowed total artistic freedom and it be more widely accepted
unfortunately labels like Geffen, sub pop, warner brothers, etc. don't want to allow there to be any grass roots fame anymore. instead they want to create quasi-royalty like Britney Spears and groom them their entire lives from early childhood to be the perfect idol that way they dont have to spend any money and they can just worry about the cost of marketing and not worry about petty things like ya know "creativity" and "individualism" or god forbid "meaningful music".. like all the things that come from supporting someone that's actually an artist.
Columbia begged Ray not to go country at the height of his fame. do you think they have to beg britney spears to do anything?
